The Healthy, Wealthy & Wise Program

The Healthy, Wealthy & Wise Program focuses on the National Trends and Services mission of empowering all aspects of life of residents in the underutilized communities in which we serve. Our goals include improving the socioeconomic level and the political positioning of residents living in the communities of our service area identified as having the greatest need by ensuring that they are Healthy, Wealthy and Wise. Our program and activities specifically target residents living in East Austin, Round Rock and Dove Springs because area research shows they have the greatest need. NTS incorporated two national programs and enlisted two national partners to create the below Healthy, Wealthy and Wise Program:

Healthy

The Austin Chapter Links Edible Flowerbeds – NTS worked with our national partner, Habitat for Humanity (HFH) and The Home Depot to adopt the community of homes being built annually by Austin HFH. The Austin Chapter Links Edible Flowerbed utilizes the traditional front yard flowerbed for a much more practical use – fruits, vegetables and herbs. Chapter members work side-by-side with the new homeowners to show them how to plant and care for the various fruits and vegetables in their new flowerbed to save money and eat healthier.
  • A professionally created Austin Chapter of The Links Incorporated Edible Flowerbed sign is displayed in each newly planted flowerbed for Links, Incorporated branding.
  • During the dedication/board-cutting ceremony the Chapter President gifts the homeowners with an Austin Chapter of The Links Incorporated branded copy of The Austin Chapter Links Gardening Guide
  • During the dedication/board-cutting ceremony the Chapter President gifts the homeowners with an Austin Chapter of The Links Incorporated branded Healthy Eating cook-book provided by the Health and Human Services Facet.

Wealthy

Wallet Wise Program – National Trends & Services partnered with Ally Financial to plan the Wallet Wise Program in the Austin Chapter service area. The series of courses covers banking, budgeting, credit scores and more. Two sessions will be held annually – one session will be held at our local HBCU, Huston-Tillotson University and one session will be held annually for the chapter’s eSTEAMed Umbrella program.

Wise

National Trends and Services created a 3-pronged approach to improve the political positioning of residents living in The Austin Chapter of The Links, Incorporated service area. Our chapter incorporated the Links national initiatives “GOTV” and “Legislative Issues, Public Affairs and Disaster Relief”, into 3 interconnected activities:
Step 1: The Austin Chapter of The Links Voter Registration Drives – Deputized Links members successfully hold Voter Registration Drives at major community gatherings to register voters for upcoming elections.
Step 2: The Austin Chapter of The Links, Incorporated Legislative Awareness Panel – The Austin Chapter developed and implemented a public forum where state and local public officials and community activists advises residents on recent legislative changes and other current legislative issues.
Step 3: The Austin Chapter of The Links Virtual GOTV – Reminding residents to vote on Election Day is the final step in our plan to increase political positioning for the residents in our service area and increase the historically low voter turnout percentage. NTS utilizes contact information extracted from informational sheets, activity sign-in sheets and activity surveys to create a database for chapter members to virtually canvass the neighborhoods via a phone bank to remind citizens to Get Out The Vote (GOTV) before election day.

PROGRAMMATIC FACETS

Health and Human Services
The Links, Incorporated established the Health and Human Services facet in response to the chronic health disparities that persist in our communities and result in the decreased life expectancy of African-Americans. This new facet brings greater focus, resources, and coordination to The Links, Incorporated’s health initiatives already in existence.
